BASIC SPECIFICATIONS ON THE MANUFACTURE OF A PHOENIX PRE-MOULDED FIBREGLASS POOL SHELL
- GELCOAT LAYER
- CORROSION BARRIER
- STRUCTURAL LAMINATE
- STIFFENING RIBS
- BUFFER ZONE
- OUTER SURFACE (SEALER COAT)
The basic laminate specification consists of a Gelcoat layer. A corrosion barrier, a structural laminate, stiffening ribs, buffer zone and an outer surface sealer.
GELCOAT LAYER
This is the surface which is in contact with the water. The pale blue cosmetic layer seen by the eye is in actual fact a Neo Pentol Glycol Resin(NPG) which is spray applied at a rate of 450 - 500g per m2. The NPG Gelcoat is also available in a variety of exciting different colors.
CORROSION BARRIER
A heat and chemical resistant vinyl ester resin-rich layer is applied immediately behind the gel coat using a finely chopped fibre creating an incredibly strong corrosion barrier eliminating any chance of blisters, osmosis or degradation.
STRUCTURAL LAMINATE
This is the main body of the pool shell as it contributes to approx.80 % of the total strength especially in the following structural areas:
- Top rim (perimeter) of pool
- Walls
- Coving
- Floor
- Step Area
The structural laminate is applied using the chopper gun process and NPG structural Laminating Resin. The laminate thickness varies between 5 - 16 mm thick, depending on the size of a pool and where the measurements are taken, e.g. floor, rim, etc
STIFFENING RIBS
A core material used in conjunction with a fibreglass matting is laminated around the top perimeter of a pool as well as other strategic areas which enhances overall rigidity and stiffness of the pool, during transport and installation.
BUFFER ZONE
A thinner flatter core material is used in conjunction with a fibreglass laminate which is positioned in strategic areas on the floor of the pool, offering protection during handling and transportation.
OUTER SURFACE (SEALER COAT)
This is an alkaline resistant coat which seals the fibreglass laminate from alkaline attack from behind, e.g., soil, acids, cement, etc.
